Medical Escort & Transportation Services Fund

Medical Escort & Transportation Services Fund

Medical Escort & Transportation Services Fund

The need for medical escort & transportation services are increasingly in demand with the accelerated ageing population in Singapore. Seniors who meet the means testing requirement are entitled up to 50-80% subsidy on their medical transport and escort fees. Post subsidy, the Seniors still need to pay between SGD 30-50 for each round trip to charity service providers like Blossom Seeds.

As their financial burden is already substantial, Blossom Seeds currently do not require Seniors to pay for this. This is absorb on charity dollars raise by Blossom Seeds. In 2018, we made at least 500 trips. Due to the increase in demand, we need to raise funds to support this service. Each SGD 50 will be able to help support at least one round trip for 1 elderly in need.

Thank you for your support.

Hear. Them. Out

Hear. Them. Out

Hear Them Out

Research has shown that social relationships, or the relative lack thereof, constitute a major risk factor for health - rivalling the effect of well-established health risk factors such as cigarette smoking, blood pressure, blood lipids, obesity, and physical activity. (House, Landis, and Umberson; Science, 1988). In addition, according to a study by Angeline Chan, Duke-NUS Grad Medical School, Department of Sociology-NUS, perceived loneliness by the elderly (ie, an individual perception of feelings of alienation and dislocation) is also associated with a greater risk of death in Singapore.

Through our Community Befriending Programme, we try to match the personality and language skills of our volunteers to that of our Seniors. Committed volunteers than make repeated efforts of engagement through face to face visitation, calls, Hear.Them.Out, organizing physical or mind stimulating games at their places where appropriate and guiding them to our centre to partake in the social re-engagement activities with others. Intervention by our volunteers also helped to provide some respite time for the caregiver.

Through this approach, we had reached out to 40 Seniors so far since we first embarked on this effort officially in Aug 2018. Almost 50% of them are also mildly-dementia patients and numbers are expected to increase.

Transformation does not happen within 1 call or 1 week, hence, we require your continual support to this programme to ensure Seniors are tuned into the community social network, living an enriching and meaningful time towards their late phase in life. Funding is used to support volunteer's basic food, transport allowance during the calls and visits, groceries shopping for the Seniors in need, activities gadget (game sets, cards etc) and receiving counselling training support to handle the cases. Support socially isolated Seniors and Hear Them Out.

Renovation of Day Activity Centre (Senior Citizens)

105 Canberra Street, #02-01/06, Singapore 750105

Over the last 12 months (2017-2018), Blossom Seeds has grown rapidly by introducing 4 core programmes to take care of elderly in the central and northern part of Singapore. Further to this, we had also secured a day activity center (Senior citizens), ~ 6000 sqft.

We envisage this to be a club, where we will deliver relevant programmes, learning workshops to encourage active ageing. A counselling room, a health check room are also planned for. There will also be activities corner for volunteer meetings and training. Specific areas will also be allocated for our medical escort team, physical health restoration corners as well as Blossom Seeds's new headquarter. We expect to serve up to 5000 seniors in time and 80-120 socially isolated elderly, above 65 years old around the Gambas, Sembawang community in the North, with numbers expecting to grow as Singapore's population ages rapidly.

The a) rest of Renovation, furnishings and fittings fund is estimated at SGD 550,000, b) Equipment (eg. audio, CCTV, exercise machine) - SGD 350,000 , c) 2019 Operating Fund - SGD 1,700,000 (not supported by any government grants)*. Your contribution is critically needed to support our efforts toward building a community of silver folks who can continue to blossom positively at their own pace, living as independently and contributing back to society purposefully into their golden years.

Thank you.

*Any surplus funds raised from a), b) and c) will be channeled into our general fund.
